NO, this is normal and expected. This does not happen every time you hit an edge but it does happen.
"Edge Chipping" on the outside edges of AR500 targets is normal and unavoidable with bullet speeds over 2,000 fps. The harder the steel is and the further over 2,000fps (feet per second) you are the more prevalent this will be.
The flat faces of the targets can typically handle 2850fps with only minimal surface marking visible at that speed.
This is due to 2 reasons;
IS IT DANGEROUS?
No, because this is a chip and not a crater there is no way for an edge chip to redirect lead anywhere other than safely off to a side. Furthermore, at velocities over 2000fps the bullets will effectively vaporize upon impact leaving nothing left.
WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT IT?
Assuming you want to shoot it at velocities over 2,000fps there is nothing you can do.
Keep in mind a 12" gong will get fewer edge strikes than a 1/4" target would as there are many more shots near the edges with tiny targets.
You will still get many years of use from your targets and if the edge chipping becomes a concern just flip them over as edge chipping does not typically extend to the opposite surface

Very well designed, I powder coated it just for a little extra shiny protection.
Just finished a 4+h camp with mostly beginner shooters.they loved it . They get tired of shooting paper targets. I had them start on paper then move to steel.. Scoped 10-22 and they nailed it.
Easy to setup and well made, perfect for a 22. Kids love it at 50yd, those things are tiny! It got a bit windy and some of the flags tore in half but honestly they seem better that way, now they don’t catch the the target next to it like they did sometimes.
Didn’t know what to expect… opened it up and easily assembled.. well over 3000 rounds in a few months and no signs of wear. A+ all the way.
What a wonderful target set. It’s well made, sturdy, and easy to relocate. The price is fair for what you get and I suspect it will last basically forever as long as you don’t shoot the wrong rounds at it. Assembly took a little time but isn’t difficult. I’ll eventually hit that 1/4 inch target!

Assembly took less than 10 minutes. Easy take down for travel. Frame is rock steady. Paddle design directs the splash into the ground. Picture shows the KYL from 50 yards in our new back yard. Great fun, indeed, and the 1/4” paddle is rather challenging! Get one.
Rex and I have been shooting your target about 3 times a week now . We took the flags off , they were getting hung up and spread with lead . Rex put 5 foot legs on his and is shooting at 70 yards away. The targets are a little easier to see. We are having fun and hope to send you some more videos soon .

Hello, I'm Todd from the wolverine state,the kyl I have is the 1/2 inch plates from shootingtargets7, mostly 22cal but also 5.56 at 100yds, awesome system, very tough and easy setup is a huge plus, half inch swings easy with 22cal even at 25yds,the bag you see is for transport of the kyl, fits great in the bag,just pop the flags and one leg off each side, it's the best kyl setup I have ever used by far!

This has been such challenging fun! From grandkids with novice experience to the very experienced - great fun. Rimfire or center fire, start at closer distances (stay safe) or lengthen the distance as you improve, it's always challenging fun.

Absolutely love the KYL rimfire target! 10x the quality of the first one I bought from Amazon! Great engineering. I like the fact that the legs, crosspiece and target separators are all standard EMT, which you can get at any hardware/electrical store. (My experience is that anything DR gets shot ...eventually) Have cleaned it several times at 25 and 50 yards. Next outing, going for 75 and 100. Pictures are from my range at home. Rifle is a CZ American .22LR, Arken rings and SH-4 Gen III, 4-16 x 50 optic, CVLIFE bipod and a Marc Taylor bag. Likes Aguila Super Extra .22 LR (at least out to 100 yards)

Due to the weather being horrible here lately, I stored this under my lean too and after today’s shooting I took this pic to send to a couple of my friends to show them. I was working in this KYL target at 50 yards. This thing is so much fun. My first seven shots were all hits until I got to that tiny little one on the end, then it took me five shots to hit it. I had a plywood back stop so I could see where I was missing just barely and when I finally figured out exactly where to hold it, I could hit the tiny one every couple of shots so I went back-and-forth a few times then I came up with a cheat instead of starting big and going little go little to big cause then you don’t start your string of eight until you hit the little one first lmao yeah I know that’s not the same but it’s good for the ego to go the other way cause you don’t hardly miss after you get the first one out of the way. I started out shooting at the little sticker dots on a piece of drywall then went to the KYL target and I noticed after really having to focus on that quarter inch sliver at the end when I went back to the paper dots my groups were getting better cause I was really concentrating a lot more than I was at the beginning of the session. 100 rounds later I’m hooked gotta setup some more stuff to shoot at.
