DISTANCE IS IRRELEVANT (We recommend 50 yards minimum, but this is conditional.)

🎯 It's not about distance — it's about bullet speed at the target. Many think shooting rifles at 100 yards is safe for all ammo, but bullet speed is what matters. High speeds cause rapid expansion and contraction of the steel, leading to marking or pitting regardless of target thickness.

Common Issue: An AR-15 with a 16" barrel and 55-grain ammo typically travels over 2850 fps at 100 yards. Shooting at or under 100 yards with this setup will likely mark your targets, intensifying into pitting as speed increases.

EDGE CHIPPING: Targets are hardest at the edges due to heat during cutting. Chipping may occur when hit near the edge with rounds over 2000 fps. This is normal and not dangerous — it won't create craters that could redirect lead toward the shooter.

SAFETY GUIDELINES — Pistols:

• 10-yard minimum; 7 yards for Steel Challenge stages.
• Rubber straps or Superhangers are safer than chains for close shooting.
• Always wear safety glasses; bystanders too.
• Avoid pitted targets.

SAFETY GUIDELINES — Rifles:

• 50-yard minimum recommended.
