Most dueling trees look alike in a photo. The differences show up the first time you shoot one. Here's how ours stacks up against a typical dueling tree.
Comparison reflects a typical competitor dueling tree based on publicly published specifications. Built for shooters who'd rather buy once than replace a rusted, wobbly tree every season.
Proper paddle selection is essential for dueling tree to work as intended.
No.
One paddle for every gun only works if everything you shoot has 971 ft-lb of energy or more.
If it isn’t, the paddle will take hits and not flip. That’s a recipe for disaster.
The Estimated Minimum Energy (FPE) to Reliably Flip Paddles table is the cutoff. Every paddle needs a minimum amount of energy to swing.
Tuning cannot make a paddle weigh less.
This tree is different:
Many paddle thicknesses and sizes, so it runs right with virtually any firearm.
Match the paddles to the gun.
All paddles swap in under 6 minutes.
Five Most Popular Handgun Rounds
(with typical muzzle bullet energy)
9mm Luger — 300 – 400 ft-lbs
.45 ACP — 350 – 400 ft-lbs
.22 LR — 80 – 135 ft-lbs (pistol / short range use)
.380 ACP — 180 – 220 ft-lbs
.38 Special — 200 – 300 ft-lbs
Five Most Popular Rifle Rounds (maximum 2100 ft-lbs)
(muzzle bullet energy)
.22 LR — 120 – 145 ft-lbs (rifle / short range); drops to 70 – 100 ft-lbs at 100 yards (long range)
.223 Remington / 5.56 NATO — 1,100 – 1,300 ft-lbs
6.5 Creedmoor — 2,200 – 2,600 ft-lbs
.308 Winchester — 2,400 – 2,800 ft-lbs
.30-06 Springfield — 2,700 – 3,200 ft-lbs
Yes, as long as the bullet is below 2,100 ft-lb and 2,850 fps when it hits the target.
The full-size Dueling Tree spine is 3/8" AR500, rated to 2,100 ft-lb of impact. Too much energy can dent or deform it; too much speed (over 2,850 fps) pits the surface.
Start at 50 yards with any rifle (10 yards with pistols). If your round is still faster or more powerful than that at the target, back up until it isn't. That distance is your minimum. Each paddle has its own limit too: 1/8" 150 ft-lb, 1/4" 700 ft-lb, 3/8" 2,100 ft-lb.
Above about 1,200 ft-lb, 1/2" paddles are the better pick. They're heavier, so they swing over slower and put less shock into the tree when they hit the stops.
This matters most with the smaller paddles, which have less mass.
Because tiny light paddles and high-powered rifles are incredibly hard on pivots, attachment points and mechanisms.
Forces on components are exponentially lower if we keep the minimum target weights where they are currently.
This ensures the targets will last a lifetime provided they are used within posted recommended use guidelines.
It takes under 6 minutes to swap all paddles. Watch this video to see how easy it is to remove and install the paddles. #play-video

*The spine of this dueling tree is made from 3/8" AR500 steel and is rated to a maximum impact energy of 2,100 ft-lb. Rounds that exceed this limit will damage the target.

For 9mm, .40 S&W, .45 ACP, .45 Colt and 10mm: 6" x 1/4" paddles with 100 lb springs. This is our tested 9mm setup.
With 9mm, .40 S&W or .45 ACP on 7" x 1/4" paddles, use 100 lb springs. 1/8" paddles use 25 lb springs, except a .22 rifle on 4" x 1/8" paddles, which uses 50 lb (airguns on 4" x 1/8" stay on 25 lb). Not sure? Easy Pick on this page gives the paddle and spring for your round, and when you add the tree to your cart the right spring for your paddles is marked in green.
Set the tree with a 5–7° forward lean. Use our free phone app to dial in the lean angle: app.shootingtargets7.com
For reliable dueling tree action, tune paddle weight to your shooting setup.
Our tree is less angle-dependent than other designs, but it still needs proper tuning:
Issue 1: Paddles don’t swing when hit.
Cause: Paddle too heavy or lean angle too steep.
Fix: Use smaller/lighter paddle, weaker spring and or reduce lean angle.
Issue 2: Paddles swing too hard, shaking the spine.
Cause: Paddle too light or lean angle too shallow.
Fix: Use larger/heavier paddle, stronger spring and or increase lean angle.
Every paddle has a toggle spring for reliable action, and the front leg adjusts the lean from 5° to 20°.
There is no one-size spring: pick the one that matches your paddles when you add the tree to your cart (we mark it in green). Extra springs are $2.99 each if you want to fine-tune.
The spring toggle also holds paddles in place, so nearby hits don't swing them.
Yes. It breaks down in 30 seconds into two pieces under 35", so it fits in a car trunk or truck bed. Range setup from the trunk takes about 5 minutes.
First assembly: under 30 minutes, and you only do it once.
Bare minimum tools:
🔧 5/8" wrench
🔧 3/4" wrench
🔧 5/32" Allen wrench
That works, but tightening the nylock nuts by hand takes a while. See the assembly video for more info.
⚖️ Without paddles the tree weighs 47 lb and splits in half by loosening 2 bolts.
With paddles it weighs up to 93 lb, depending on which paddles you choose. See the weight charts in the photo gallery.
Steel and design.
The frame (mast, legs and pivots) is AR500 hardened steel, about 4× harder than mild steel (≈500 vs ≈120 Brinell). Most budget trees use a mild-steel stand, and AR500 costs about three times as much.
The 3/8" AR500 spine is rated to 2,100 ft-lb at the target (keep speed under 2,850 fps). Patent-pending spring toggles stop paddle shake, phantom swings and stuck paddles.
It's zinc plated, so it can live outside. It stands 72" tall, takes 3"–8" paddles, and splits into two pieces under 35" for transport.
Every part is sold separately, and it's backed by our Lifetime Guarantee (when used as directed) plus "love it or I'll buy it back."
TL;DR: Zinc plating lets the tree live outside, even where bullets and spall scratch it.
Durable: electroplated zinc bonds to the steel, so it doesn't chip off like paint or powder coat.
Rust protection: where it's scratched, the zinc corrodes first and protects the steel.
No. Love it or I'll buy it back, and I'll even cover return shipping.
On top of that, it has our Lifetime Guarantee when used as directed.
I shoot my dueling trees on my range often and absolutely love them. I'm confident you will too.
All parts are available separately and are priced reasonably. You should never need any parts, but if you do, you'll be taken care of.
I keep improving our products based on customer feedback.
This version uses the patent-pending paddle mechanism I developed for our Climb to Glory target. It has 60% fewer parts than the previous tree, performs better and costs less. Older reviews and videos may show the earlier version.
Like all our products, it's backed by our Lifetime Guarantee (when used as directed) plus "love it or I'll buy it back."
