Common questions about dueling Tree Paddle Selection (FAQ)

Proper paddle selection is essential for dueling tree to work as intended.

Can I just buy 1/2" paddles so I can shoot everything with it?

No.

One paddle for every gun only works if everything you shoot has 850 ft-lb of energy or more.

If it isn’t, the paddle will take hits and not flip. That’s a recipe for disaster.

The Estimated Minimum Energy (FPE) to Reliably Flip Paddles table is the cutoff. Every paddle needs a minimum amount of energy to swing.

Tuning cannot make a paddle weigh less.

This tree is different:

Many paddle thicknesses and sizes, so it runs right with virtually any firearm.

Match the paddles to the gun.

Paddles swap out in minutes.

What are some common FPE ratings for typical weapons?

Five Most Popular Handgun Rounds

(with typical muzzle bullet energy)

  1. 9mm Luger — 300 – 400 ft-lbs

  2. .45 ACP — 350 – 400 ft-lbs

  3. .22 LR — 80 – 135 ft-lbs (pistol / short range use)

  4. .380 ACP — 180 – 220 ft-lbs

  5. .38 Special — 200 – 300 ft-lbs

Five Most Popular Rifle Rounds (maximum 2100 ft-lbs)

(muzzle bullet energy)

  1. .22 LR — 120 – 145 ft-lbs (rifle / short range); drops to 70 – 100 ft-lbs at 100 yards (long range)

  2. .223 Remington / 5.56 NATO — 1,100 – 1,300 ft-lbs

  3. 6.5 Creedmoor — 2,200 – 2,600 ft-lbs

  4. .308 Winchester — 2,400 – 2,800 ft-lbs

  5. .30-06 Springfield — 2,700 – 3,200 ft-lbs

What is FPE?

FPE stands for Foot Pounds of Energy. The higher this number, the heavier a paddle your bullet will be able to spin reliably.

Can I safely use this Dueling Tree with high-powered rifles?

Yes—as long as you're far enough away that, at the point of impact, the bullet's energy is below 2,100 ft-lbs and its speed is below 2,850 fps.

The spine of this dueling tree is made from 3/8-inch AR500 steel, rated for a maximum impact energy of 2,100 ft-lbs. Exceeding either limit will damage it:

  • Too much energy (over 2,100 ft-lbs) can dent or deform the steel.

  • Too much speed (over 2,850 fps) generates enough heat at impact to pit the surface.

When shooting high-powered rifles, pick a distance where the bullet's remaining energy and velocity have both dropped below these thresholds.

The farther downrange you are, the more both values fall.

Staying within these limits protects the target and keeps it durable for the long haul.

Why offer 1/2" paddles if your Dueling Tree spine is only rated to 2,100 ft-lb?

If bullet energy is over 1,200 ft-lb, it's a good idea to opt for 1/2 in thick paddles. They are heavier and will not swing over as violently when hit.

This is especially true for the smaller paddles that already have less mass.

This results in less shaking because the paddles swing slower and put less force into the tree when they reach the limit stops on the opposite side.

Why don't you sell the smaller paddles in 3/8" and 1/2"?

Because tiny light paddles and high-powered rifles are incredibly hard on pivots, attachment points and mechanisms.

Forces on components are exponentially lower if we keep the minimum target weights where they are currently.

This ensures the targets will last a lifetime provided they are used within posted recommended use guidelines.

How long does it take to swap paddles?

It takes under 6 minutes to swap all paddles. Watch this video to see how easy it is to remove and install the paddles. #play-video

How far away do I have to be with my rifle?

That depends on what you're shooting, but you must not shoot any AR500 with a bullet moving faster than 2,850 ft/s or you will pit the steel.

If what you're shooting is faster than 2,850 ft/s, back up until it's not. This is your minimum safe distance.

Also ensure you are within the rated energy capacity of the targets you are shooting.

1/8" 150 fpe

1/4" 700 fpe

3/8" 2100 fpe

Because the spine of this dueling tree is 3/8 inch AR500, it is not recommended for you to shoot it with rifle rounds in excess of 2,100 ft-lb of energy.

🙋‍♂️ Frequently Asked Questions

🤷‍♂️ Why does it look different than it does in some of the reviews and/or videos ?

I continually update our products based on customer feedback. It's something that I've always done and something I always will do.

Although the last version of this tree did perform well, in my opinion it was overly complex, had far too many pieces, and because of this was necessarily more expensive than I would have liked it to have been. I was getting a fair amount of pushback on the price that I had to charge for this product, and knew I had to come up with a better solution.

I recently developed our new Climb to Glory Challenge Target and came up with a new paddle mechanism (patent pending) that worked so well there that I had to move it over to this product as well. This change resulted in this tree having 60% fewer parts than the previous version.

Performance and durability are improved, and the cost is significantly lower as well.

I stand behind this Improved version of this dueling tree, just as I stand behind all of our products with a lifetime satisfaction guarantee.

⚠️ Why does this cost more than Chinese trees?

TLDR: AR500 Steel Tree (Shooter Benefits)

AR500 costs three times more than A36 mild steel often used in cheap dueling trees. AR500 features 5 times the strength and every part of our dueling tree is constructed from it. Our tree offers unmatched shake-free free stability due to its superior rigidity.

The proprietary over center toggle spring assemblies eliminates paddle shake, phantom swinging and stuck paddles. No other tree at any price has this.

The spine withstands rifle hits up to 2100 ft-lbs., supports 4 inch up to to 8-inch paddles in any thickness for versatile training, and provides unmatched versatility. The portable, split-mast design simplifies transport and setup, making it a durable, high-value choice for serious shooters.

AR500 Steel Tree: Superior Strength Justifies the Premium

Our steel tree is crafted entirely from AR500 steel—mast, paddles, and legs—unlike budget trees using mild steel.

While AR500 costs three times more than mild steel, its exceptional benefits deliver unmatched performance and durability, fully justifying the investment.

Why AR500 Steel for Every Component?

  • Unmatched Rigidity for Stability:

    • The 3-1/2 inch wide, 70-inch long, 3/8-inch thick AR500 mast, paired with AR500 legs, boasts four times the tensile strength of mild steel. This eliminates shake, even with heavy paddles swinging at high speeds, ensuring a rock-steady shooting platform.

    • AR500 legs enhance stability, preventing wobble or tipping on uneven ground, unlike weaker mild steel or aluminum supports.

  • Exceptional Durability for Long-Term Savings:

    • AR500’s superior strength withstands direct hits from centerfire rifles up to 2100 ft-lbs of energy (speed below 2850 fps at the steel). Every part—mast, paddles, and legs—is built to endure intense use without damage.

    • Its abrasion-resistant properties resist wear from repeated impacts, reducing maintenance and replacement costs compared to mild steel, which deforms or fails faster.

  • Versatility for Advanced Training:

    • The AR500 structure supports up to 8-inch paddles, a feature no other tree offers, enabling diverse target setups for professional and competitive shooters.

  • Precision Performance:

    • The rigid AR500 framework, combined with overcenter paddle toggle spring assemblies, delivers crisp, responsive paddle movement, enhancing accuracy and feedback critical for skill development.

Additional AR500-Driven Benefits

  • Portable and Durable Design: The AR500 mast splits in half for easy transport, a first-in-class feature that balances portability with uncompromised strength. AR500 legs ensure quick, secure assembly.

  • Uniform Excellence: Using AR500 for every part eliminates weak points, unlike trees with mixed materials, ensuring consistent performance across the entire structure.

Why the Higher Cost Pays Off

The threefold cost of AR500 steel over mild steel reflects its premium quality, delivering:

  • Unrivaled stability for reliable shooting.

  • Long-lasting durability that outlives cheaper alternatives.

  • Versatility and precision for advanced training needs. This all-AR500 tree is an investment in performance, reliability, and longevity, offering unmatched value for serious shooters.

Choose the all-AR500 Steel Tree for a superior shooting experience.

🙅‍♂️If I hate it am I stuck with it?

I poured my heart into perfecting this, and I’m beyond thrilled with the result!

I shoot my dueling trees on my range often and absolutely love them.

I’m so confident you will too, that I’m backing it up with my personal ironclad guarantee: Love it or I’ll buy it back, I'll even cover return shipping!

I'm super comfortable doing this because I honestly feel this is the best and most versatile dueling tree available at any price, and it's not even close.

🤷 What if I break a part?

All parts are available separately and are priced reasonably. You should never need any parts, but if you do, you'll be taken care of.

🤷‍♂️How much do the trees weigh?

Since we don't know what paddles you might choose the weight will be given without them.

⚖️ Without paddles, the tree weighs 47 lbs and is (easily broken in half by loosening 2 bolts)

for weights with paddles, see the image above.

🙋‍♂️FAQ

🚗 Can I easily take this dueling tree in my car or truck?

This target is easy to move, breaking down in 30 seconds into pieces under 35 inches—fits any car or truck. Lightweight when split, simple to store, and quick to assemble.

🎵 Is the tree "tuneable" for proper action?

The dueling tree includes a toggle spring for reliable paddle action across most uses.

Its front leg is adjustable for tuning the tree’s angle from 5° to 20° for perfect paddle swing.

Optional stiffer or softer springs can fine-tune action, but the standard springs suffice.

The spring toggle keeps paddles secure, preventing unwanted swings from nearby hits, unlike other designs.

🎯 What setup do you recommend for a 9mm pistol tree?

With 9mm, the spring depends on the paddle size:

  • 6" x 1/4" paddles: use the 100 lb springs.

  • 7" or 8" paddles: use the 50 lb springs.

The 100 lb springs are only for 6" x 1/4" paddles with 9mm, not every pistol setup. Set the tree with a 5–7° forward lean.

Use our free phone app to dial in the lean angle: app.shootingtargets7.com

⚠️ My paddles won't swing over or are swinging over violently.

For reliable dueling tree action, tune paddle weight to your shooting setup.

Our tree is less angle-dependent than other designs, but it still needs proper tuning:

Issue 1: Paddles don’t swing when hit.

Cause: Paddle too heavy or lean angle too steep.

Fix: Use smaller/lighter paddle, weaker spring and or reduce lean angle.

Issue 2: Paddles swing too hard, shaking the spine.

Cause: Paddle too light or lean angle too shallow.

Fix: Use larger/heavier paddle, stronger spring and or increase lean angle.

🛡️ Why should I care if your tree is zinc plated?

TL;DR: You can leave this tree outside forever and it will never rust.

Zinc plating outshines paint/powder coating for shooting targets: tougher against bullet hits, self-protects steel from rust even when scratched, low-maintenance, and cost-effective long-term.

  • Durable: Zinc fuses to steel via electroplating, resisting chipping unlike paint/powder coating. Handles direct bullet hits without breaking down.

  • Rust Protection: Scratches don’t expose steel; zinc sacrifices itself to prevent rust, unlike chipped coatings.

  • Low-Maintenance: Withstands bullet/spall damage, needing minimal upkeep compared to frequent repainting.

  • Cost-Effective: Higher initial cost but lasts longer, saving money on repairs, especially for outdoor/busy ranges.

🛠️What tools do I need to assemble the tree?

Estimated time: Under 30 minutes.

See assembly video for more info;

Bare minimum;

You can assemble it this way but it will take awhile

to tighten the nylock nuts.

Fortunately, you only have to assemble it once.

Was hesitant because of the design with the front leg. After watching videos and assembling, i found its better than the standard 4 leg designs. its solid and stationary, wont fall over and the front leg allows you to adjust the tilt and thats huge when not on a flat surface. Best design, quality, portability, and price on the market. Plus you can purchase separate plates for use with other cartridges.

First dueling tree and I’m in love! Painted the tree tan just to help it blend in and eliminate glare from the zinc. 1/4” (0.250) easily moves with 9mm both 6” and 8” paddles. In fact I had to put a good amount of forward lean to not get bounce back on the smaller paddles and the 8s still move smooth.

Dueling Tree Target

Customer video review of Dueling Tree Target

The Dueling Tree was easy to put together and I love the tripod design for uneven terrain. Setting it up against a sloped berm was no problem and the design made it easy to set the angle. I chose the six inch 1/4 inch thick AR500 paddles with 100 pound springs as suggested by Mark for 9mm. This combination works great and was very fun to shoot. I am impressed by the quality from this company.

Customer photo review of Dueling Tree Target

I can't believe how precise ALL of the parts for this six plate pistol dueling tree fit together. These paddles are designed to work right without having to fiddle around with them. I used standard 9mm Blazer 115gr RN bullets in a Walther PDP (full size) from 50ft. to do my testing after assembly. The tree was tilted at an 8 degree angle from verticle towards the shooter. Everything worked perfectly and I couldn't be more pleased. Years ago I had purchased a full range set of competion targets from ST7 and they have been in use for years with absolutely no issues. That alone is why I won't buy any steel targets elsewhere. Truly "bullet-proof" steel targets meant to last a lifetime. Thank you ST7 !!!

Loving my dueling tree! Shipped quickly and was easy to assemble with a regular tool kit, nothing crazy required. Everything fit well, no issues at all. I’ve put a few hundred rounds into it and its seen some rain, looks as good as when I built it. I added the fluorescent paint to splash on impact for better visibility, plates don’t even show a bit of wear from the impacts (9mm) Has been a ton of fun trying to get faster and faster.

Great target. Breaks down small and is easy to move when set up.

Dueling Tree Target

Store owner replied: Thank you so much for your review Francisco. Increasing that lean angle a bit by adjusting the front leg or / and using stiffer springs will help you with that little bit of paddle bounce back that I see up top. Currently, Dueling Tree ships with 25 lb-ft springs, but they will soon be available in 50 and 100 lb springs as well. This will get you that crisp, clean action that the tree is capable of. Or if you're fine the way it is, shoot away. I'm glad to hear you're enjoying the Target.

Hours of fun ! So well built will be adding another to my rifle range soon.

Dueling Tree Target

Customer photo review of Dueling Tree Target

Go bigger or go home. At the time of order ST7 was out of 6” paddles so I opted for the 4” paddles. .22 LR will flip them if you shoot on the outer edge. I was going after a versatile shooting tree that could take 9mm also. I have no complaints about the shooting tree which shipped with the heavy duty springs. I haven’t had a chance to shoot 9mm at it yet but I’m sure that caliber will turn the tables. The tree is built very well with steel components and looks like it’ll hold up for years to come.

Dueling Tree Target

Store owner replied: Hey Casey, thank you for your review. You really need to have 1/8 inch thick paddles (I see you got 1/4") with the light duty springs to get proper action with rimfire. I'm surprised you can swing those 1/4" paddles at all. The first FAQ in our Target Paddle Selection Guidelines section in the middle of this page speaks to this. Should you want proper action with your Rimfire, you might consider grabbing some 1/8" thick paddles. In the meanwhile, you can remove the springs completely if you're unable to make them swing. The springs are a very nice additional feature but are not absolutely necessary if you're having issues not being able to swing the paddles. Grabbing the correct eighth-inch-thick paddles for Rimfire will make for a better experience. Fortunately, they are quite inexpensive.

Customer photo review of Dueling Tree Target

Hello Mark, hope you had a great Thanksgiving! I couldn’t be happier with your “dueling tree” & paddles. An excellent design using top quality components and fabrication. The .250 x 7” paddles swing great using my 45 acp shooting & reloads (Acme 200gr SWC over 5.6 grains of W231) even with inside edge hits; and factory 230 grn Ball ammo, well, what can I say! No rebounds like with my homemade tree. My 22 LR swings the .125 x 6” paddles w/ the lighter springs great too. I’ve been welding / fabbing for close to 50yrs and couldn’t build a clone of your tree at a cost that would justify doing so even if I had the technology to cut and machine the AR500. My only regret is I didn’t buy it earlier in the year as Wisconsin winter is here. Best regards, Rick

Customer video review of Dueling Tree Target

I may not be a perfect shot, but this dueling tree is seriously awesome! Smooth & works like a charm! I love the smoothness! The paddles flip super easily and you get instant feedback without ever having to reset the target. Easy to haul! The tree is easy to move around. It fits perfectly in my short-bed truck making range trips a breeze, yet it's solid when set up. Plus, I like that I can tune it for different paddles which makes it very versatile. Simple to put together & built tough! Putting it together was easy. An impact wrench would have helped, but my old wrenches worked just fine. The instructions are great and easy to follow. A hit with the whole family! This thing has become a family favorite! Everyone loves it and it's awesome for building skills. Definitely Recommend It! If you're thinking about getting a dueling tree, grab this one! It's fantastic—great performance, smart design, easy to transport, and super durable. It makes range trips way more fun.

Hi Mark, Dueling tree works great! I might adjust the lean a little. If the hit is closer to the spine sometimes it doesn’t flip with the 9mm. Feel free to use the video as you like or my any of the comments I’ve made. As always it is a great product, could not be happier with it!

Dueling Tree Target

Used it for both 9mm handgun and PCC and .223 and found it incredibly well built and reactive. Highly recommend. Can't find a better option for the price

Store owner replied: Thank you very much, Tom. I'm super happy to hear you're thrilled with the Dueling tree. For the benefit of others who may be wondering, I'll share that you purchased the tree with 6-inch by 3/8-inch paddles and the 50 ft-lb/in springs. If you'd like to hop on camera and share a video of you shooting it with your 9mm and your .223 I'll get you a $50 gift certificate for our store in exchange for your time spent doing that.

Very fun time with the dueling tree!

Dueling Tree Target

I really like the engineering with the captured nuts, and it has held up well so far. We've found that the springs like to jump off and disappear over time, and they might need a better attachment method, but other than that, which might just be solved with a few washers, it's been perfect.

Dueling Tree Target

Store owner replied: Thank you for your feedback, Michael. That spring issue has already been fixed. I will send you what you need right away at no cost. I'll also include six new springs at 50 ft-lbs/in instead of the 25 ft-lbs/in you were sent and you'll find you should not have any issues after that. 🫡 Mark | (ST7 Targets)

Fairly straightforward to assemble, easy setup at the range with just three bolts, and it worked without any adjustments the first time out. Overall, very happy with it and much more fun than just shooting paper all day.

Haven’t opened it yet to be honest. Wife got sick and my dad passed.

Dueling Tree Target

Haven’t been able to use it yet! Weather in Wisconsin has been bad! As always all of products I have gotten from you have been outstanding and great quality! Have been a customer for a long time and looking forward to getting some more products! Pleasure doing business with your company! Thank you, Mark Slussar

Dueling Tree Target

This target is amazing! I am more than satisfied with this beast all the way around. So versatile and the family can’t stop shooting at it.

Dueling Tree Target

Exceptional quality. Functions perfectly. I take it to the range in my truck so I have to break it down into 3 componets to transport and carry. It is rather heavy due to its heavy duty materials it is constructed with. all in all I would purchase it again

Dueling Tree Target

I had to settle for the 4 target tree where I have my own range but all in all I'm super satisfied with it. I've had Shooting Target 7 targets for some time now and that's why there was no shopping when I wanted to add a tree. Excellent and super rugged products is what I wanted and got from my latest addition. Mark comes across as an honest hard working guy who really cares about what he sells to his customers not to mention his repeat customers. Thanks Mark!!
